about

from about 1995 through 2002, the Missin' Cousins played a monthly Wednesday night residency at the Stork Club at 125-12th Street in downtown Oakland. We had a blast playing there to the dive bar regulars, alcoholics, bartenders, up and coming country acts, and friends.

It is something to be singing a really sad song and then right in the middle of it, everyone jumps up and cheers because someone made a great pool shot, or to hear the sickening splat of a drunk falling off of his or her bar stool. And we loved especially heckling the mayor Brown from our stage when he came in for a drink.

We finally quit the gig when Mickey and Wes were forced to move the Stork and relocated in the fancier Uptown area, where luckily to this date the stork is as much of a dive as ever.

Here are a couple songs from that time. Eternity is an original song and Banks of Marble is not.

lyrics

Eternity:
When I still a child, I’d stare out on the sea
My thoughts they seemed to flow back through eternity
Did I do something so wrong, somewhere along the line --
Or in another life, now I pay for my crimes...

Take me, eternity
On earth and in high heaven
There’s no place for me

Sometimes I get to thinking
‘bout what’s wrong and what’s right
To stay here’s unbearable
To leave’s just not right
So I look out on the stars, and I think I see a light
But I blink, and it’s gone… another long night

Take me eternity,
On earth and in high heaven
There’s no place for me

When will my work be over
My time on earth end
The toils of life be ending
Going back home again
What of a home in heaven? -- I never will know
I’m waiting for the leaving, but where will I go

Take me eternity
On earth and in high heaven
There’s no place for me

There’s no place for me and I guess it’s all right
I’ll best be leaving, tomorrow, good night
